Plugged In, Not Charging - Windows Vista + Laptop
posted by antonio (188) 9 months ago (www.jaygaulard.com)
I noticed a while ago that whenever I turn on my BRAND NEW HP laptop, the battery indicator say something like, 83%. I say to myself, âWhat the heck is that about? This laptop is brand new and the battery was charged to 100% when I used it last.âToday, when I turned the laptop on, it said, âPlugged in, not chargingâ and the power read 8%. I

I have the same problem. Anyone willing to tell us a solution?
i also have the same problem,, my lap top is 2 months old.. hp really sucks
this problem seems to come when the laptop/battery is too hot, i unplugged mine, moved it somewhere cool and plugged it, 3 minutes later it was charging normally
I just had the same problem, but I unplugged my external hard drive and it started to charge again. I suppose the external hard drive uses up extra power that would be used to charge the battery
I had this problem w. my windows vista hp and i have found the solution. the battery bar in the right corner said that it was plugged in, but wasnt charging. i decided to remove the battery from my laptop after shutting it down. then i put the battery back in after a few seconds. and it began to charge. hope this helps.
I had the same problem and found this site before I could sovle it. My computer was saying 0% available (plugged in not charging) There is a battery diagnostic utility built in to windows vista that will test your battery. the first time I tried it it said replace battery. I disconnected battery while a/c was plugged in reconected after 15 - 20 seconds and tried again then it said the battery was good now it is charging try that hope it works for you because it was driving me crazy.

Just take out the battery for a few minutes, switch off all the cabels then put it all together again and it should work. Vista sucks.
6-21-08 It happens that my Dell Inspiron 1420 is still within Dell Support contract, I called them and they dispatched a onsite support technician to replace the AC adator and the battery (6-cell 65W) with new ones. This immediately addressed the problem. FYI, my OS is Windows Vista and i know a lot has been mentioned about its poor management of Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control, but in my case, this wasn't the problem as hardware replacement fixed my "Plugged in, not charging problem."

I have a HP dv6000 series...It happened the same...I realized it was because of the sp2 I had just installed in my notebook...Thanks Vista!...then I uninstalled it...at the same time the batery started charging....I hope it helps
Yes, my battery was on 39% plugged in but not charging. I shut down the computer and removed the battery for some few seconds and fixed it back. Then it started charging. So try that and it will work.
Check your a/c adaptor the wire may have broken from the inside, i had the same problem, after i buy or replace the a/c adaptor it worked fine
this is all about your a/c adaptor, i had the same problem, i chance the a/c adaptor and it work now fine. For some reason my wire cord got damage from the inside, i think chair wheels past over it.
try to turn off your computer with the adapter plugged in. the turn it back on, it should now say charging. it just worked on my hp
i've done it NUMEROUS times. i turned it off then turned it on. It would say charging but after like 5 min it would say "plugged in, not charging". i hate HP.
Not only HP, have the same problem with my Fujitsu Siemens, so I think it's a Vista problem. Just now mine says, 0% available(plugged in, not charging) Mine does the same after reboot, or unplug and plug it again
Same problem with a Dell Inspiron 8500 on Vista Ultimate. Typical Microsoft selling us a third time round with sub-standard basic routines.
Add Gateway to that list. I bought my laptop new about three months ago and it started doing this today. Was anyone able to figure out what's going on or what to do? Thanks, Kristen
Another HP one: Pavilion dv9212. Barely a year old, longer than everybody here but still too short for normal battery lifespan
dell xps m133o added the the list.
so acer (extensa 4420-5239) .. PLEASEE SOMEONE HELP ME!!
I had the same problem with my toshiba satellite pro Think part of the problem is with the Vista OS
This is what i did to solve the problem
1. Plug out the AC Adapter 2. Switch the Power option mode to Power Saver 3. Plug back in the AC Adapter
Only annoying bit is the laptop is very slow when its in the power saver mode.
Hope that helps someone.
As i said mine is a Toshiba laptop not sure if this will work for other laptop brands.
Hope Microsoft comes up with a patch for this one.
Have a good day RainManAlex
I have a toshiba satellite also and i have the same problem. Only mine still does not charge. Also sometimes the AC adaper sparks when I plug it in. You think it might be the adapter or battery?
This document pertains to HP Notebook PCs with Windows Vista. Understanding battery charging issues If the notebook battery is not charging or the notebook does not indicate that the battery is charging, the most likely scenario is that the battery itself is operating correctly, but its power management software may have become corrupt. In order to correct the problem, you will need to uninstall and reinstall the power management software by using the Device Manager. This document will explain how to uninstall and reinstall the ACPI Battery listings in Windows Vista, as well as how to obtain and install updated BIOS files, if needed to correct other battery issues. Uninstalling and reinstalling power management software in Windows Vista In order to correct problems with the battery's power management software, follow the steps below.
1.
Click Start and type device in the search field, then select Device Manager .
2.
Expand the Batteries category.
3.
Under the Batteries category, right-click the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery listing, and select Uninstall .
WARNING: Do not remove the Microsoft AC Adapter driver or any other ACPI compliant driver.
4.
On the Device Manager taskbar, click Scan for hardware changes .
Alternately, select Action > Scan for hardware changes .
Windows will scan your computer for hardware that doesn't have drivers installed, and will install the drivers needed to manage your battery's power. The notebook should now indicate that the battery is charging.
that doesnt work for me???? what other options do i have???
yah! it worked. thanks :]
i have an hp and it didn't work for me either...
I have don what u said and it will charge for about 10 sec and then it goes back to not charging
you can ad acer to to the list. My acer laptop does the same stupid crap of plugged in, not charging!!
this worked!! thank you so much!
Thanks, that worked for me. I have a HP DV6100 series.
This workded for me.. Thanks alot :p
This suggestion worked for me too...except I had to uninstall then unplug and plug in the battery to get it to recognise properly and start charging....thanks!
i did tht and it started working! thanks
Maan, my battery is showing 0% charged... it just shuts down the moment i unplug my adapter... I cant even charge my HP battery a bit.. m pissed off with HP. :-(
Hae!! Same proble with Dell!! too... 4 months since I got the laptop. Called support... they are sendig new battery and update to bios...
I am a PC Tech and am working on a Toshiba Satellite A135-S4527 laptop. I thought it was the DC jack. DC jack is fine. I've read several blogs that seem to point to a hardware problem (motherboard) causing the issue.
I experience intermittent charging ability. The AC light at times refuses to acknowledge the presence of AC power. I'm starting to believe it is Vista causing the issue.
With the battery removed the laptop will power off. Maybe a thermal issue not sure yet.
With the AC light on battery "not charging" the laptop will run until the battery is dead, resulting in a hard power off. Laptop will run with the battery removed, but it also will suddenly power off...making me think it is a thermal/heat issue.
At any rate, uninstalling the acpi compliant control method battery and searching for hardware changes is working right now...but i'm not holding my breath unless the thing works for a few days.
Thanks for the info it was right on target.
mike
First time it just shut down without a warning or anything. Now that I know what the problem is, I'm pissed because this computer is relatively new.
"plugged in, not charging" Thats like saying... "new 52'' LCD T.V., not going to turn it on"
don't just click on the restart because i did that and it didnt work. Instead just click on the "shut down". When you turn your laptop back on it'll probably say its charging. hope this helps.
The method of which Steve mentioned above worked for me, thnx!
Unplug the power adapter, select Power Saver, replug the Power adapater. It will show "plugged in, charging". You can then change back to Balanced and it will work.
Overall disappointing - it should kick in charging the moment it is replugged in, without all this garbage.
Regards, Nikhil
there seems to be so many different ways of gettin the battery back on too charge but this is still happening to my battery/laptop.it is only 7 months old itself. vista itself only says its a new battery that is required...more like a vista fault with software. i'll post something if i find anything more solid
I tried a bunch of different suggestions here with no success. then I ran spyware doctor (from google). not sure if it was a coincidence but the battery prob went away . . . lets see for how long!
uninstalling and installing Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, worked for me, but on did when I removed the AC power, uninstalled and installed (note while AC is still out), I plugged back the power everything worked perfectly. (Not again, it didn't work while AC was plugged in.
Hope that solves it for everyone.
thanks a lot sir, ur trick worked for me ......thanks again......

If it does not seem to work after you restarted your laptop, leave the charger plugged onto the laptop for awhile and it will eventually start to charge
i had the same problem, windows vista is useless! i tried the spyware doctor someone below suggested and it worked for me.
I was down to 3% on my HP laptop, not charging. Tried Steve's suggestion with Device Manager and it didn't work. Then I ran PCTools' Spyware Doctor as suggested. After the scan, I checked the bubble above the battery indicator and it's now 'CHARGING' - and at 7% already! Who'd have thought it!
google spyware doctor worked for me
give me any suggesion for my hp laptop plagged in 25% not charging
my laptop is hp my battery is in and charger it says "plugged in charging" its on 4% but its not charging at all its just running from the wire even tho it says charging its not
I had the same problem with my toshiba satellite P 100 Install and Reinstall ACpi not work fo me !
hi i had same problem with dell xps 1530 and vista, it said plugged in and not charging and i tried everything and dell sent new battery but the problem was still there, the new bios update number A09 solved the problem
Trying out all the suggestion below on my HP DV6226US.... after several combination. Here is the way I solved my problem: 1. Unplug AC adapter. Shutdown 2. Remove battery, Connect AC Adapter 3. Start Vista. Remove Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, 4. Shutdown, Remove AC Adapter, Install battery, Reattach AC Adapter. 5. Power up -> Now Plugin and Charging..
Hope this may help some of you.
Hi all,
I got the same problem (that is now solved): "29% available (plugged in, not charging)" I have a : HP Pavilion dv677 (5 months old) Windows Vista Home Premium I shut down the PC, removed the battery for a few minutes, put it back, restarted the laptop. And everything seems fine now : at least it indicates "Fully charged 100%" , but I don't know how often it's going to happen again....
This is definitely a vista (or a driver) issue, since there are at least three to four types of laptops that have this problem, mine included. Mine's a semi custom-made one from cyberpowerpc.com. I fixed my problem by unplugging the ac adapter, reinstalling the battery driver, then plugging it back in.
Think about the basic design of a battery, it is a collection of particles that move rapidly to generate energy. The fast the particles move, the more energy (and heat) is created. Once they hit a certain amount, they are expending energy at a 100% rate and not taking in energy. When these particles are allowed to slow down (shutting laptop down and removing battery) they are no longer required to create enegy. This allows them to slow and retain energy instead of expending it. To dumb it down a little, the when a battery is extremely hot, it cannot charge. Unplug it, let if cool down and it will charge as normal.
i have a dell inspiron 1525 and nothing seems to work. I've tried everything mentioned here. I can't install BIOS because it says i need to have at least 10% charge. Is there anything else no one has mentioned
i found the soulution just now, just remove it from laptop, then return it back again, it will start recharging.
